kier here is a free digital newsletter sent out every Friday at noon PST.
Well folks, I have big news to share…
I’ve been awarded a grant to write my first book!
I’ll be writing a memoir about coming of age among anarchists in Vancouver and Montréal. It will explore the peril and allure of our preoccupation with transcendence in its many forms: spiritual transcendence, transcendence of material conditions, the transcendence known as love or revolution. This story will resonate with those who have felt the impulse to escape their own life and will examine whether such an undertaking is truly possible.
In order to give this manuscript my full attention…
Kier Here is going on hiatus.
I will not be publishing essays on a regular schedule for the foreseeable future. I will, however, be back when the time is right, so I hope you’ll stick around!
I’ve been truly moved by the conversations and connections that have emerged from writing this newsletter, and they have strengthened my resolve to go deeper.
If you miss me terribly, I can still be reached at kier@substack.com.
Thanks to each and every one of you—I’ll see you on the other side.
Pet of the Week
Look at Rin’s tiny baby chicks! They told me baby chicks are known to fall asleep while standing, faceplant into the bedding, and keep on sleeping, just like that. Same, baby chicks, same.
If you want your furry, feathered or scaled friend featured in an issue of Kier Here, please email kier@substack.com with your name and a picture and short bio of your animal companion so they can be the next Pet of the Week.
Kier Here finally cracked and joined social media! You can find me on Instagram, Twitter, and in various gardens, libraries and living rooms sprinkled around the Salish Sea.
Congratulations on receiving the grant.
Those without experience in grant writing don't understand the work, sweat, rejection, humiliation, revision, rewrites, etc., that goes into them!
If you ever want a first reader, let me know!
